How To Make Protein Shakes Without Using Protein Powder

Protein shakes are a convenient way to get proper nutrition after a workout, during a busy day or when you’re on the run and don’t have time to eat. Not only does protein provide energy, but it strengthens the muscles. There are literally hundreds of different types of protein powders available on the market, though most protein powders are expensive. If you want to save money, you can make a protein shake with natural ingredients from your pantry, instead of using protein powder.

The choosing of the correct one will require some skills and intelligence of the individuals. The paying of the charges is from the budget of the people. 

Step 1

Create a base for your protein shake. Your base could be water, but for a richer flavor and a thicker texture, use milk. You can choose cow’s milk, soy milk, almond milk, rice milk or hemp milk. According to the “Los Angeles Times,” cow’s milk is an excellent source of calcium but it has saturated fat which is not healthy for the heart. Soy milk has no cholesterol and is a good source of protein and calcium but some people don’t like the taste. Choose your base depending on your taste preferences and nutritional needs. Add 1 to 2 cups of your base to the blender.

Step 2

Choose a protein source. While the base you use may have some protein, you can increase the amount of protein in the shake by adding an ingredient like peanut butter. While it is not generally recommended because of safety issues, you can make protein shakes with raw eggs. Another good protein addition is chopped nuts. Two tablespoons of chopped nuts or peanut butter can add a good amount of protein to your shake.

Step 3

Add in healthy fruits for a better taste, texture and nutritional quality. Bananas are a traditional addition to protein shakes because they provide a creamy, smooth texture. “Men’s Fitness” magazine recommends adding 1cup of frozen berries to your protein shake, to add antioxidants. While fruit contains an insignificant amount of protein, it does add taste to the shake. You can use mangoes, peaches, pineapple, or whatever fruit is in season.

Step 4

Toss in some additional flavoring ingredients if your protein shake needs an extra kick. “Men’s Fitness” magazine states that flavorings like peppermint extract and instant coffee can enhance both the aroma and flavor of your protein shake. It recommends adding a few drops of an extract, like peppermint or vanilla, or 1 tsp of instant coffee to your shake.

Step 5

Blend your protein shake to a smooth consistency.
